Growing up in Southeastern Wisconsin, I knew about hard water. Tons of water softener salt every year, "floaties" in the ice cubes, the way you couldn't use the tap water when ironing or you'd leave rust stains behind. Mom used to joke that all those extra minerals and iron were good for our bones and teeth and at least we'd never be anemic! Living in apartments for a few years, I used plenty of paper plates because landlords weren't known for keeping up water softeners or replacing broken down, scuzzy dishwashers. The rest of the time I hand washed until I was too pregnant to reach into the sink. When I got my own home, I gave up and decided the powdery residue on the dishes was just part of life. I rubbed it off the glasses and plastics the best I could and kept a few newer, handwashed glasses on hand for guests. Trying to scrub the marks off the silverware and dishes before a holiday meal always took hours. I felt I had to re-wash by hand the things the babies would use - the film on them felt gross. When our water softener died (and was too costly to replace) things went downhill fast. The dishwasher became disgusting and I broke a few nails chipping at the thick layer crusted on the inside. I had bought dark blue dishes just a few weeks earlier. I knew they would need special care, but they were so pretty it was worth it. They ended up looking so bad within a couple months I was nearly in tears. Scrubbing wasn't working and I thought my pretty dishes would meet their fate as I broke them in frustration and used the pieces in craft projects. I decided I better put them in a storage box while I tried to find a way to restore them. Everyone said it was just "one of those things" living in a hard water area brought. One day as I was checking brands of cleaner and dishwasher detergent for something new that might help, I ran across Lemi Shine in one store across town. Having already tried several products and spent too much money on bad results, I figured for under four dollars, it was worth a try.

September's Lemi Shine Testimony Contest winner comes from Krysten, a mom of nine children!  Congratulations from all of us at Lemi Shine!

Krysten Wrote:

I'm a mom with nine kids. Yep, I said nine. So you can imagine that we go through a lot of dishes at every single meal. I count on my "servants," the washing machine, the dryer, and boy, do I count on the dishwasher!

When our water softener broke, I could tell the difference in my hair right away. But I didn't put two and two together about the dishes. My sons were grounded for three weeks in a row because I found dirty dishes in the cabinet! After the boys (brilliant science students that they are) figured out the correlation between the cruddy glass shower doors and the drinking glasses they couldn't get clean, (and after their mother sheepishly apologized), we all set out in a search for an answer.

I love my little country home and all the amenities this life brings: the animals, irrigation, septic system and hard well water. I recently went back to school full time leaving me little time to complete my normal home chores. My husband and son graciously chipped in so I could complete my goal with less stress. Throughout the first months things seemed to be going smoothly and our arrangement was going great. Until I came home one day and my husband had torn out the dishwasher. He was tired of having the dishes come out looking worse than they went in due to the water residue and spots.

My husband and I have been married for 9 years and have moved 7 times during that time. Our first place did not have a dishwasher, but all of the others have. We rented until just over a year ago and let me tell you, those other dishwashers were quite a story in themselves. One apartment had a dishwasher that was actually older than the building. It was a pink 1960's model while the building was built in the 80s. None of them worked very well, and we did not have the option of replacing them. I tried every product I could get my hands on. I tried every home remedy I found online and that my friends recommended, and nothing seemed to get the dishes really clean. There would always be a film and sometimes grit. I mostly hand washed everything. We lived in a town whose water supply came from a limestone reservoir. Sometimes the water would actually come out of the tap cloudy. I knew there had to be something that would work.

We moved to Indiana 5 years ago from California and slowly started to see a change in our dishes and dishwasher performance over time. My glassware especially was looking very cloudy and spot ridden. We had to hand wipe every load to try and get some of the deposits off. Even after scrubbing the glassware, they looked horrible once they dried again. I went online and searched for tips and tricks for better ways to clean and de-scale my dishwasher. I even tried some products that are designed to clean washers with poor results, and that did not last more than a week or two. Nothing worked as well as I was hoping so each few months I had to manually scrub off the deposits with a scouring pad.
